Principal Design Lead – User Experience, Service Design and Design Research

Avanade Design Leads are specialists in their field, applying human-centred design practices, principles and expertise to the definition, design and delivery of digitally enabled services. Key Role Responsibilities:

As a Design Lead, you will direct teams and be a respected manager among your peers, clients, team members and esteemed contributor to leadership decision-making. This role leads projects and teams on a number of work-streams and ensures they deliver design strategy to the highest quality, at the agreed cost and scope of the broader project(s).

You will apply your solid experience of clients, design management, technology platforms and digital design to deliver cost-effective, timely and highly usable solutions and delivery plans. You will be responsible for the overall success of engagements, through pre-sales and planning, resourcing through to final implementation of individual projects using human-centred tools and methodologies.

You will sustain good client relationships and optimise teams’ work, ensuring the smooth running of projects, including guiding decision-making on the ground. You will steer projects to success and be responsible for the quality of the teams’ work, proactively preventing problems, responding to issues and ensuring we delight clients and our people.

Day-to-day, you will work in a variety of areas:

Be cognisant of relevant trends, share best practices, help identify and refine offerings and cascade opportunities for growth and elicit and analyse client feedback in order to help the business respond to change. You will help develop new methodologies, methods and training materials to maintain the continued relevance of Avanade design capabilities.

On the ground, you will be the ambassador of Avanade and its design practice, exemplifying our values to clients and delivering with excellence and as an amenable, pragmatic, professional ‘safe-pair-of-hands’ for all facets of delivery work including scope and cost discussions.

Realise and communicate the benefits of design through leading end-to-end project delivery work and outcomes from your teams that demonstrate the value of design-led work. You will manage the full lifecycle of value creation, from business development work through to implementation; ensuring we deliver the right solution to our clients, people and colleagues at every step and on every engagement.

Through the work of your teams, you will embody and demonstrate the value of design and its practice within Avanade. You will manage the delivery of individual projects and maintain the highest standards in practice via adoption, refinement and measurement of standardised processes, procedures and project management work across work-streams and teams.

Run multiple accounts and projects and report back the status of multiple projects and salient data for forecasting including supply and demand trends. Respond to change and optimise our approach through continuous improvement and build and maintain teams in order to deliver work effectively by fostering strong team diversity, learning, collaboration, reliance and rewards. You will actively contribute to sales and pipeline in collaboration with leadership to increase revenue and market share. 

Enable teams, colleagues and peers to deliver end-to-end service design projects to the highest level of quality with clear leadership and communication. Be at the centre of recruitment and make hiring recommendations to leadership.

You will be primarily responsible for:

  • Plans, estimates, proposals and projects
  • Status, escalations and interventions
  • Patterns, components and architectures
  • Audits, tools, compliance and status
  • Deliverables, work-product and protocol definitions

Key Role Skill & Capability Requirements:

Good knowledge in all aspects of Digital Design, ideally with master’s accreditation in a relevant field of research or design

Membership of the wider design community, with a strong set of projects in the public domain

Track record in complex, technology enabled service design delivery, ideally with experience in agency, consulting and in-house delivery

Good design project management skills and expertise, spanning all aspects of managing, running and maintaining multiple work-streams

Preferred Certifications: 
Design Thinking, Agile or Scrum and Service Design

Preferred Education Background: You’ll likely possess a master's degree in Product, Interaction or Service Design, Human Factors, Human-computer Interaction or similar degree. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also suffice.

Preferred Years of Work Experience: You’ll likely have about 5+ years relevant UX/Service design experience

Preferred Years of Management Experience: 2+ years managing people/teams

Scope of Work:

Nature of Work: Creates and implements work plans for assigned projects, programs, and/or clients against established operational objectives; supports translation of group strategy into objectives and work plans.

Scope of Work: Provides operational leadership for large-scale, strategically critical work efforts requiring significant coordination.

Complexity: Complex problems that span work domains and require continual alignment to internal and external business issues to deliver expected results across groups.

Discretion: Wide latitude in approach to work, including ability to reshape work plans, guided by professional best practices and domain expertise.

Organizational Impact: Work efforts have significant impact on near- and medium-term Avanade and/or client operations. If client-facing, should contribute to client-relationship and sales outcomes.

Supervision Received: Works independently, with occasional validation of work efforts against strategic and operational objectives. Significant latitude in judgment & approach.

Supervision Provided: Mentors and manages work efforts of more junior colleagues and team members as required by various work-streams; may formally supervise work of project teams. If managing team(s) of more junior employees full-time, then refer to the People & Business Leadership levelling criteria. Often serves as Career Advisor.

Knowledge Applied: Applies advanced knowledge of learned occupation / discipline and strong business operational acumen.
